Bananas grow in tropical climates, where the weather is hot and humid year-round. They originate from Southeast Asia, but today, they are cultivated in over 135 countries worldwide, mainly in the equatorial regions of Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands.
Bananas grow on plants that are technically giant herbs (of the genus Musa) and not trees, despite their tree-like appearance. These plants can reach heights of up to 7 meters and bear banana bunches that can weigh up to 50 kilograms.
DID YOU KNOW,
botanically speaking, bananas are considered berries? According to the botanical definition, a berry is a fleshy fruit produced from the ovary of a single flower and containing seeds. Bananas fit this definition, even though they don’t match the idea that most people have of a berry.
